Scenario-based eLearning

This eLearning experience was designed to improve the client satisfaction skills of new graphic designers who must be able to create effective designs while maintaining client vision.

Audience: Newly hired graphic designers

Responsibilities:
Instructional Design, Action Map (Needs Analysis), Storyboard, Visual Design, Mockups, eLearning Development

Tools Used:
Articulate Storyline, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, Lucid, Google Docs

KPI:
Client retention will increase by 5% as designers create graphics that satisfy the client's vision while effectively using design color theory.

Problem and Solution

Data determines 65% of the company’s business comes from existing clients as opposed to 35% of business coming from new clients. While understanding the importance of continuing to gain new clients, the company has decided there needs to be a focus on retaining clients. The company has determined they would like to boost customer retention by 5% to potentially increase their profits by 25-95%.

After careful analysis, I determined that one of the keys to solve client satisfaction is the ability to combine design theories with client vision to develop effective designs. I proposed an immersive scenario-based eLearning experience to help designers apply design theory to specific client requests they will encounter in a real-world setting. Keeping client satisfaction in mind, the learning experience would help the learner make a connection between using design theory combined with client vision to receive positive client feedback.

Process

During the analysis phase, the goal was defined and the specific practices necessary to achieve client satisfaction identified. The process from there included creating an action map, drafting a  text-based storyboard, designing visual mockups, building out an interactive prototype, then with client approval finishing the full learning experience in Articulate Storyline 360.

Action Map

The action map helped to identify specific actions to improve client satisfaction. It was determined that when it comes to graphic design the ability to meld clients' brand identity, the graphics intended function, and successful graphic design theory is necessary for client satisfaction. The ability to create designs that are able to meet all of these standards allow for the development of functional and aesthetically appealing graphics that satisfy the client. There are many design theories that would suit the purpose of this learning experience, and so the theories were simplified down to color.

I worked with the subject matter expert (SME) to begin creating the action mapping, guided by Cathy Moore’s strategic action mapping process. After identifying important actions necessary for client’s to feel their graphics purpose and vision have been met, a measurable performance goal was developed for the learning experience.

When the high priority needs of the design process were brought to light, these priorities became the focus and foundation of the development. It was then determined the most effective eLearning experience would be using scenarios structured as real-world design challenges. This action map was then used to guide the development of the text-based storyboard.

Text-based Storyboard

After completing the action map, development of the text-based storyboard began. The specification of using color theory provided structure when generating the scenarios designers would be learning from.

Building design scenarios focused on instances where designers are given design challenges with specific client requests for the color palette and function of the design. In each scenario, designers would be selecting the best option provided to combine both of the functional needs and desired aesthetics to successfully satisfy the client.

Visual Mockups

When the text-based storyboard was approved, the visual mock-ups were created utilizing Adobe Illustrator and Adobe XD.

Adobe Illustrator was used to customize sourced graphics and create original graphics. Adobe XD was used to create visual mockups allowing for the opportunity to determine how the visual elements would work together and construct slide layouts. Using Adobe XD allowed for timely changes of the visual assets and the layouts of the slides based on feedback.

Interactive Prototype

Building the prototype also allowed the opportunity to test user interface and address issues with buttons, states, and functionality. Allowing any issues with user experience and user interface design to be addressed before full development. Once the prototype was approved, Articulate Storyline 360 was used to move the project into full development.

The prototype brought the experience to life and enabled the ability to receive feedback on the functionality and design from the user perspective. The gathered information was used to  improve the flow of the learning experience and make the experience more immersive for the learner.

An interactive prototype was created in Articulate Storyline 360 using the approved storyboard, mock-ups, and slide layouts. An introduction, notebook aid matching activity, and question slide were developed.

Full Development

The prototype stage provided a solid platform on which to build the complete final project. The full development of the scenario in Articulate Storyline 360 was straightforward after creating all visual elements  and a programming framework for each consequence was established. This ultimately resulted in learning a lot more about the features in Articulate Storyline and building more confidence as a developer.

Results and Takeaways

The development phase of this project was instrumental in gaining a deeper understanding of tools that help create professional and quality eLearning experiences. I deepened my understanding and use of Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator while completing this learning experience. I gained so much knowledge of how to design, develop, and refine a learning experience that was scenario-based and addressed real-life performance problems. I have a grasp of the skills and tools needed to develop immersive and engaging eLearning, and am excited to continue to grow and improve.
